Why We Exist
The harmonium holds deep cultural significance across Indian classical music, bhajans, kirtans, Sufi qawwali, and South Asian folk traditions. Yet access barriers — cost, availability, space, and maintenance — prevent many aspiring musicians from owning one. AI Harmonium was created to change that: a free, instant, browser-based harmonium that anyone with an internet connection can play from anywhere in the world.
What You Can Do
- ● Play all 7 Sargam notes plus Vikrit Swar (altered notes)
- ● Computer keyboard, mouse, touchscreen, or MIDI controller input
- ● Multiple octave switching for extended range
- ● Transpose and pitch adjustment controls
- ● Volume and reverb controls for expressive playing
- ● Real-time Sargam notation display (Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni)
- ● Light and dark mode for comfortable practice at any hour
- ● Keyboard shortcuts for fast, fluid control
- ● Zero latency — powered by Web Audio API
How It Works
AI Harmonium uses high-quality samples processed with impulse response reverb to deliver an authentic sound. Real-time pitch-shifting via the Web Audio API enables seamless octave switching and transposition with minimal latency. The Web MIDI API integration lets you connect external MIDI controllers for a more tactile playing experience. Everything runs locally in your browser — no server round-trips, no buffering.

Background
The harmonium was introduced to India by European missionaries in the mid-19th century. Indian musicians adapted it with their own tuning system (Sargam) and playing technique, making it an indispensable accompaniment for Hindustani classical music, bhajans, qawwali, and folk music. Today it is one of the most widely played keyboard instruments across South Asia. AI Harmonium continues this tradition in the digital age.
Design Philosophy
We believe in simplicity: open a page and play. No accounts, no paywalls, no complex configuration. The interface is intentionally minimal — the focus is on the music, not on menus and settings. Every design decision prioritises reducing friction between the musician and the instrument.
